VR for social change

Set of the 12 Virtual Reality Series

Mission:

To make new ways of learning accessible to all.

We believe new ways for education is a human right, so we want to build an exciting virtual reality library for our youth with accessibility, affordability and sustainability at its core.

Hi! I am Ana Corrie, Venezuelan/British VR director and executive producer living in London. I am the director of this project.

The project is a set of 12 virtual reality series that explore different branches of knowledge through immersive storytelling. Each virtual reality series is like a planet from the same galaxy, but with their own unique identity and laws that apply exclusively to them.

Math is Weird, the math-focused VR series

Alternative Realities (currently titled Math is Weird), is the pilot of the math-focused VR series: an adventure 6DOF animation of 10 minutes of expected running time.

It was selected for the 2021 Biennale College Cinema Virtual Reality international, a program developed by La Biennale di Venezia.

Alternative Realities (Math is Weird) was also selected for the Venice Production Bridge at the next 78th Venice International Film Festival.

Goal: to discover a new sense of wonder for math.

During this workshop (which happened back in January) we received training, project development, and production support, which has been an invaluable experience for the R&D of the series.

MY PERSONAL MOTIVATION/CONNECTION:

This is a project that is very close to me, very personal.

I was terrible at maths, and really struggled at it when I was in high school. But it was recently when my passion was triggered by meeting very visionary mathematicians, people that introduced me in ways that were exciting. A flame was ignited inside me, and grew and grew because I started to read about mathematicians, watched amazing documentaries (check out the documentaries about Paul Erdos, Ramanujan, Maryam Mirzakhani). It became an obsession. I was possessed by the idea “ok I can’t understand complex ideas and all of that” but I can FEEL mathematics in ways that I couldn’t before, and that to me was fascinating. And then I had a vision:

What about if we could find ways to ignite that flame in the heart of teenagers around the world through the power of immersive storytelling and emotional design. That is what this project is about.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Our immersive VR series has an edutainment bent and sits for distribution ambitions in the VR for social change category.

In fact, our interest is to expand audiences to include adolescents in educational poverty, and who are health -vulnerable and hospitalized in children’s hospitals. Our goal is to combine the goal of democratization and audience development with that of high technological and artistic standards. Initially, our geographic target audience is Italy, and the UK. We will target 2 to 3 places at most in each territory, and work closely with them.
